I'm slowly counting down the hours to the next time I can finally lather some shampoo into my hair. It's oddly torturous, especially since I've gotten into the routine of shampooing every time I bathe, and I bathe twice a day. Reading all sorts of articles about hair care now, apparently overly frequent shampooing dries your scalp out and prompts it to secrete more oil - which in turn makes you feel like you need to shampoo even more. At least that explains why my hair isn't swish-worthy for commercials. And also why it always looks ridiculously flat. Some quotes from a few articles:
"Indeed, nothing kills your color faster than frequent lathers, especially for red or brunette colored hair."
"Coarse, curly, dense textured-hair can go longer without washing because that type of hair is more dry and it absorbs the oil. It's more beneficial for people with that hair to not wash every day."
"These days, because I get highlights and my hair is damaged, I only shampoo 3 or 4 times a week. This has definitely helped my hair a lot: it’s much less dried out without the constant shampooing and blow drying."
"According to Wikipedia, lice actually survive better on clean hair than dirty."
"Celebrity hairstylist Ken Paves, who does Eva Longoria and Jessica Simpson’s hair, agrees that you shouldn’t wash your hair every day. Ken says that 'certain hair types and textures only require washing once a week, where others work well washing 2 to 3 times a week.'”
"Last year Richard Glover, a radio host in Sydney, interviewed Matthew Parris, a columnist for The Times of London who hadn’t shampooed for more than a decade. 'So many people called saying that they wanted to try it, too,' Mr. Glover said, that he decided to challenge his audience to go without shampoo for six weeks. Eighty-six percent of the over 500 participants who reported results said their hair was either better or the same. One participant, Emma Rowles, 22, blamed her former 'itchy scalp' on shampoo and declared: 'There’s no way I will ever let a drop of shampoo anywhere near my head again.'"
